Symbolism

Shield. The dark blue field portrays Torpedo Alley, an area off the coast of the Outer Banks, North Carolina where German U-boats attacked and sank Allied ships during World War II.  The blue field also implies the location of the first U-boat sinking of the War, attributed to Lieutenant Commander Maurice Jester’s leadership as captain of the USCGC ICARUS.  The black pile, signifying the German submarine U-352 hiding in the ocean, is reinforced with a silver border to emphasize the heavily armored and weaponized enemy.  Despite being outgunned and outsized, Jester successfully sank U-352 by utilizing depth charges as illustrated by the two enflamed grenades.  The grenade upon the black pile denotes the vital hit that caused the U-boat to plummet and forced German sailors to evacuate.  The light blue chief with white border symbolizes the surface, sky, and Jester’s command.  Upon the chief, the gold chains portray the capture and rescue of 33 surviving German sailors, one of whom was the U-boat commander.  The golden cross securing the chains alludes to the Navy Cross, awarded to Jester for his heroic actions.

Crest.  The trident symbolizes Jester’s leadership position as Commanding Officer of the USCGC ICARUS.  Furthermore, it highlights the maritime authority and law enforcement of the United States Coast Guard.  The wings highlight the name of the cutter Jester served on and commanded.  The story of the Greek mythologic figure Icarus is about the consequence of hubris, which points to the fate of U-352.

Supporters.  The two oars signify Jester’s enlistment into the Coast Guard as a surfman.

Motto.  The motto, “AGAINST ALL ODDS,” highlights Jester’s success in sinking a powerful and previous undefeated U-boat.  His actions achieved two milestones on the American front during World War II.  First, the USCGC ICARUS was the first Coast Guard ship to sink an enemy U-boat.  Second, Jester rescued and captured German sailors as prisoners of war.  Additionally, he was the first Coast Guardsman to receive the Navy Cross.  Jester’s quick decision-making saved the lives of his crew.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background enclosed by a dark blue border edged along the outside with a gold rope and inscribed “USCGC MAURICE JESTER” above and “WPC 1152” below in gold.
